When a college sends student “debt” to collections is it the same as student loan debt? ?

I attended a local college and took three courses in a semester. After sitting down with a financial aid officer and filling out the appropriate paperwork, I thought it was all taken care of. However, after the semester ended I started to get bills in the mail for the entire tuition amount. When I called, someone in the collections department at the college told me that the paperwork had not been filed and it was to late to reverse the problem. They even messed up my pell grant. I was furious AND I was getting married the following week. I had no time to deal with it and I put it on hold. Then I began to receive phone calls from a collection agency.

Its been a year and the debt is still with the collection agency. They are SO rude and they keep telling me that the debt cannot be included in a bankruptcy (which my husband and I are considering) because it is the same as a federal student loan. Is this true? If not, can this debt be included in my possible bankruptcy?

What would you do if you got kicked out of college?

Suppose that after 2 or 3 years of going to college, you drop out because of financial problems or just because you fail classes. Now you have about 20k student loan debt and still no diploma or degree. Would you keep trying to save more money/ get more student loan to try to go to another college? or would you just give up and work at mcdonalds all your life?

I graduated college this past May and have a lot of student loan debt to pay off along with a bunch of little bills. I would like to get out of this debt as soon as possible as well as gain control of my finances in general. I need to start saving for retirement too. Which financial guru should I go with? Ramsey or Orman? Which advisor has the best books, plans, etc.? Personal stories/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

I went to college for 3 years. Did not graduate because of all the loans I took out. Now I live at home with a dead end job. I can’t find a better paying job because I have no degree, I cannot go back to school because the loaner will not let me get the transcript. Do you thinkI hve a strong case? I have a 05 nissan payments are 500 a month. I am currently behing 6 months and the car is in collections. I owe 20,000 and I recieve a letter stating that they’ll settle the account for 16500. The car is maybe worth 10000. I need to fix my situation and either some how get rid of car or turn in or who know what I can do to fix my situation.

How do couples function with enormous student loan debt and spending habits in California?

I was dating a girl for 5 months who was really quite wonderful until I came to the realization that she was 0,000 in student and car loan debt (75k student/ 25k car). She obtained her Master’s in Social work at an expensive school and a job which was spiritually beneficial but not financially helpful. Being 30 and having goals to want to live in a house someday I felt like the only way to help things move forward in the relationship was to get a 2nd or 3rd job to help her pay down her debt and/or for her to live with me rent free. In the meantime, she was responsible in paying down the debt with minimum payments but spent her excess cash on coffees, massages and eating out which made me think perhaps we had different philosophies on spending. While debt can’t ruin your life of having some instant gratifications im interested in understanding how couples function with the burden of student debt lingering over them if they aspire to have a family and a buy a condo in California?
Additional Details: I have my Masters in Electrical Engineering and am blessed to have made choices that allowed me to have no student or credit card debt. Is it common for couples to break up over debt or is love the stronger factor? How do couples sacrifice their personal goals (house and family) and stay with each other in the face of student debt they get into to fulfill their occupational dreams?

I kept dropping in and out of school for years. Now i’ve taken a job as a painter’s assistant that i love. But i no i will not be able to pay anything on my loans because i barely make minimum wage. I don’t care about my credit because i already got bad credit.
